An Ontario senior sought technical assistance for his printer but fell victim to a scam, resulting in a loss of $25,000. The incident began when the senior dialed what he believed was the Geek Squad hotline for printer support.

The individual on the other end of the line claimed to be a representative of the Geek Squad and offered to assist with the printer issue remotely. However, the situation quickly turned fraudulent when the scammer gained access to the senior’s computer.

Under the guise of fixing the printer problem, the scammer proceeded to gain access to the senior’s bank accounts and convinced him to transfer $25,000. It was only after the transaction was completed that the senior realized he had been duped.
