Emmanuel Scotts, age 55, has been sentenced to a 12-year prison term after being convicted of committing fraud against four women, leading to losses exceeding £320,000. His conviction comes after an eight-week trial where he was found guilty on four counts of fraud by false representation and had earlier admitted to possessing articles for use in fraud. The sentence was delivered at Kingston Crown Court on November 25, 2022.

The case was investigated by the Dedicated Card and Payment Crime Unit (DCPCU), which includes officers from both the City of London Police and the Metropolitan Police Service and is sponsored by the banking and finance sector.

Scotts was accused of exploiting the trust of women he encountered on an online dating platform, convincing them to “invest” in fraudulent schemes that purportedly returned small amounts of “interest.” In reality, these were manipulations to fund his own lifestyle. The most substantial individual loss was reported to be £232,969.

The DCPCU’s meticulous investigation led to Scotts’ apprehension and subsequent conviction. In the wake of this case, authorities stress the importance of public vigilance, especially when meeting people online, and advise following the Take Five to Stop Fraud campaign’s guidelines to prevent such crimes.

The severity of the sentence reflects the serious nature of romance fraud and serves as a deterrent to similar crimes, highlighting the emotional and financial devastation such schemes can inflict on victims.
