Ocean Network Express (ONE), a shipping company based in Singapore, is working with Japan’s Yusen Logistics to improve environmentally friendly practices in their delivery processes through ONE’s green shipping service called ONE LEAF+. This partnership is focused on cutting down carbon emissions in shipping by using sustainable biofuels.
ONE LEAF+ uses a type of biofuel made from recycled cooking oil, known as Used Cooking Oil Methyl Ester (UCOME). This fuel is safe for the environment and breaks down naturally. The service offers savings in carbon emissions that can vary between about 10% and 80%, depending on what each customer needs. Customers can also receive certificates to verify their emissions reductions and track their environmental efforts.
Kohei Omura, who leads the Ocean Freight Forwarding Group at Yusen Logistics, expressed his happiness with the partnership, saying it allows them to provide greener shipping options and helps customers lower their greenhouse gas emissions.
In its 2024 Sustainability Report, ONE announced a significant reduction of 62% in their direct emissions in 2023, using 2008 figures as a starting point. The company aims to achieve a 70% reduction in these emissions per container moved by 2030. Yusen Logistics is also committed to cutting its own direct emissions by 45% by 2030 and ultimately aims for net-zero emissions by 2050.
This collaboration is part of a larger trend in the shipping industry, where companies are looking into alternative fuels to reach net-zero goals by 2050. For example, Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) has built the world’s first tugboat powered by ammonia and is working on an ammonia-fueled gas carrier. Similarly, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has successfully transferred ammonia between ships and is designing a bulk carrier that runs on ammonia. These efforts show the industry’s dedication to adopting greener practices and minimizing their environmental footprint.
