Okta Reveals Wider Impact of Security Breach on Customer Support System

Okta, the cybersecurity firm, disclosed a more extensive compromise of its customer support system than initially believed, according to a letter sent to clients and obtained by CNBC. The company reported that hackers stole data from all customer support users, a breach far more significant than the originally reported impact on around 130 customers. Okta’s shares initially dropped by as much as 7% in pre-market trading following the news.

The expanded scope of the breach raises concerns about potential heightened attacks or phishing attempts targeting affected users. However, Okta assured that there is no “direct evidence” of hackers using the extracted data to target customers. The compromised information included email addresses and full names of 99.6% of the impacted customers.

In response to the security incident, Okta is collaborating with a digital forensics firm to conduct a thorough investigation. The findings will be shared with customers upon completion, and affected individuals will be notified. Notably, customers in government or Department of Defense environments were reported to be unaffected by the breach.

Despite the security setback, Okta’s financial performance for the third quarter surpassed expectations, with adjusted earnings per share at 44 cents, beating analysts’ estimates of 30 cents. The company’s revenue for the quarter reached $584 million, exceeding the consensus estimate of $563 million.
