Oil Prices Inch Up Amid Escalating Middle East Crisis and Tanker Diversions

Oil prices experienced a slight uptick on Tuesday as tensions in the Middle East intensified. Ship tracking data revealed a growing number of tankers altering their course away from the Red Sea in response to attacks by Yemen’s Houthi movement in the area.

Brent crude futures increased by 12 cents, approximately 0.2%, reaching $78.27 per barrel at 0002 GMT, following a 14-cent decline in the previous session. Meanwhile, U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude dipped by 17 cents, or 0.2%, settling at $72.52 per barrel after a U.S. public holiday on Monday.

The Houthi movement in Yemen announced its intention to broaden its targets in the Red Sea region, including U.S. ships. This declaration came after U.S. and British strikes on Houthi sites in Yemen. The attacks prompted more oil tankers to steer clear of the southern Red Sea on Monday, leading to increased shipping costs and extended transit times for oil shipments.

In response to the strikes, the U.S.-led Combined Maritime Forces based in Bahrain issued a warning for all ships to avoid the Bab al-Mandab Strait at the south end of the Red Sea for several days, as reported by tanker body INTERTANKO.

Tensions in regional shipping escalated further last week when Iran seized a tanker south of the Strait of Hormuz, another vital shipping corridor.

While oil prices registered a 2% increase last week due to the growing conflict in the region, analysts suggest that the lack of a direct impact on oil production may be limiting the extent of these gains.
