DTI Pushes for Better Logistics and Supply Chain Efficiency

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is reaffirming its dedication to making the logistics and supply chain sectors in the Philippines more efficient in order to lower the prices of goods. DTI Undersecretary Mary Jean Pacheco shared this goal during the recent launch of LogisticsNews.PH in Makati City.

During the event, Pacheco referenced a study from the Japan Transport and Tourism Research Institute (JTTRI), which points out that improving infrastructure is crucial for strengthening our local supply chain. The study suggests several strategies, such as integrating and upgrading the Manila, Batangas, and Subic ports to increase their capacity. It also highlights the need for ongoing development of double-track railways, better freight stations, and enhanced barge transportation to reduce traffic on the roads.

Additionally, the study calls for creating a reliable roll-on/roll-off transport network, setting up logistics hubs close to major ports, and expanding logistics services beyond big cities. Other recommendations include establishing a dependable cold chain logistics system, using technology to improve logistics operations, and fostering better cooperation among all parties involved in logistics.

Pacheco stressed that making these improvements will require investment from both the government and private companies. “We hope that everyone can understand that connecting our islands is one of our dreams, whether through public or private investments,” she said.

The event also marked the introduction of LogisticsNews.PH, an online platform designed to share updates on trade and logistics.

In addition to these efforts, the DTI is actively working on projects to position the Philippines as a leading logistics hub in Asia. This includes developing a National Logistics Strategy and a National Logistics Investments Plan to attract more funding for logistics infrastructure and enhance the country’s supply chain efficiency. These initiatives are in line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s vision to make the Philippines a top logistics hub in the region.

Moreover, the DTI’s Three-Year Food Logistics Action Agenda, which President Marcos approved in August 2023, outlines plans to transform the country’s food distribution system, lower transport and logistics costs, and address supply chain issues. This comprehensive strategy highlights the government’s commitment to ensuring that all Filipinos have access to sufficient, affordable food.

Overall, these initiatives show a collaborative effort by the DTI and its partners to improve the logistics and supply chain system in the Philippines, which will help boost the economy and enhance the quality of life for its citizens.
