Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his UK counterpart, Rishi Sunak, engaged in a substantive discussion on Tuesday regarding the ongoing negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the United Kingdom. The leaders underscored their shared commitment to achieving an “early conclusion” of the FTA, emphasizing the importance of strengthening the bilateral relationship.

In a statement following the conversation, PM Modi expressed satisfaction with the progress made thus far, reiterating their dedication to bolstering the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations. The discussions centered on expediting the finalization of a mutually beneficial FTA, which is seen as pivotal for enhancing economic cooperation and trade ties between India and the UK. A government press release issued after the dialogue echoed these sentiments, confirming the leaders’ commitment to advancing bilateral cooperation across various sectors. It noted the positive strides taken in the negotiations towards reaching an early conclusion of the FTA, highlighting the significance of the agreement for both countries’ economic prosperity.

Furthermore, PM Modi and Sunak discussed the progress made under the Roadmap 2030, a framework aimed at deepening collaboration in areas such as trade, investment, defense, security, and emerging technologies. The leaders expressed satisfaction with the advancements achieved under this strategic initiative, affirming their shared vision for the future trajectory of bilateral relations. In addition to trade matters, the conversation also touched upon regional and global developments of mutual interest, reflecting the broader scope of India-UK cooperation on key geopolitical issues.

The negotiations for the India-UK FTA commenced in 2022, marking a significant step towards strengthening economic ties between the two nations. The 13th round of talks took place from September 18 to December 15, 2023, with the subsequent round scheduled to commence in January 2024. These negotiations have addressed a wide range of complex issues, including trade in goods, services, and investment, with both sides striving to achieve a comprehensive and balanced agreement.

The bilateral trade between India and the United Kingdom has been steadily growing, reaching $20.36 billion in 2022–2023 from $17.5 billion in the previous fiscal year. This upward trajectory underscores the increasing economic interdependence and potential for further collaboration between the two countries. The discussion on the FTA comes amidst other notable developments in India’s trade relations. Recently, India signed a landmark $100 billion Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) bloc, comprising Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. PM Modi hailed this agreement as a “watershed moment” in the history of ties between the five nations, emphasizing its potential to create a win-win situation for all parties involved.

In conclusion, the dialogue between Prime Minister Modi and Chancellor Sunak reflects the mutual commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation and advancing economic partnership between India and the United Kingdom. The ongoing negotiations for the Free Trade Agreement signify a significant step towards realizing this shared vision, with both sides working towards an early conclusion of the agreement to unlock new opportunities for trade and investment.
