Turkey Accelerates Bilateral Trade Agreement Negotiations with Canada and the United Kingdom

in Trade Agreements

In a coordinated expansion of its bilateral commercial diplomacy, Türkiye has advanced negotiations on two critical cross-border trade agreements intended to reshape international trade contracts with key Western economies, according to reports from Anadolu Agency, Arab News, and GOV.UK. On October 22, 2026, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney formally announced the launch of bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations before the end of the year. The pact is designed to substantially broaden commercial trade contracts, elevating bilateral trade volume from an initial $3 billion to $5 billion, with an ultimate objective of reaching $10 billion.

President Erdogan highlighted that the upcoming negotiations signal a fundamental turning point in economic relations between Ankara and Ottawa. ‘We have today overcome the disconnect that had persisted between Türkiye and Canada for many years. Now we are launching a new era between Türkiye and Canada,’ Erdogan stated, as reported by Anadolu Agency and Arab News. Prime Minister Carney confirmed that Canadian trade negotiating delegations will arrive in Ankara next month for the inaugural round of discussions. The negotiations are structured to establish comprehensive cross-border trade frameworks and commercial contracts across strategic industries, specifically energy, critical minerals, defense industries, aerospace, and nuclear power.

Parallel to the transatlantic breakthrough with Canada, the UK Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade confirmed the conclusion of Round 6 negotiations in London for an enhanced Free Trade Agreement with Turkey, as noted by Investing.com. The bilateral commercial relationship reached £28.3 billion in 2025, reflecting a 3.9% year-on-year increase. During Round 6, negotiating teams finalized draft text and harmonized contractual parameters spanning government procurement contracts, cross-border digital trade rules, intellectual property rights, commercial services, and trade remedies.

Underscoring the legal rigor governing the accord, the UK Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade affirmed: ‘The UK will only ever sign a trade agreement which aligns with the UK’s national interests, upholding our high standards across a range of sectors,’ confirming that both delegations are preparing for Round 7 negotiations in the coming months. For corporate enterprises and commercial legal practitioners, Türkiye’s simultaneous negotiations with Canada and the United Kingdom represent a significant modernization of cross-border procurement terms. By codifying binding rules for digital commerce, defense contracts, and critical resource distribution, the agreements provide enhanced legal certainty and clear dispute-resolution mechanisms across vital Eurasian and transatlantic trade corridors.
