India and Argentina have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening cooperation in lithium exploration and mining. The agreement was formalized during a meeting in New Delhi between India’s Union Minister for Coal and Mines, G. Kishan Reddy, and Raúl Alejandro Jalil, Governor of Catamarca, Argentina. Senior officials from the Ministry of Mines were also present at the discussions.
The MoU, signed between Mineral Exploration and Consultancy Limited (MECL), a Public Sector Undertaking under India’s Ministry of Mines, and the Provincial Government of Catamarca, Argentina, aims to facilitate deeper collaboration in critical mineral exploration and resource development.
Argentina, which is part of the “Lithium Triangle”, holds significant reserves of lithium, a key component in electric vehicle batteries and renewable energy storage systems. The discussions included ongoing lithium exploration initiatives by Khanij Bidesh India Ltd. (KABIL) and Greenko in Catamarca, as well as opportunities for increased participation of Indian companies in Argentina’s mining sector.
Both sides explored potential investment opportunities, long-term supply agreements, and joint ventures to strengthen India’s access to lithium resources. Discussions also covered policy frameworks, regulatory considerations, and sustainable mining practices to ensure a balanced and mutually beneficial partnership.
The collaboration is expected to enhance lithium exploration efforts, improve resource security for India, and create new opportunities for Indian enterprises in Argentina’s mining sector. The MoU reinforces both nations’ commitment to strengthening bilateral ties in the critical minerals domain and expanding cooperation in the global supply chain for essential resources.
