Beverly Hills Resident Faces Charges Related to Luxury Goods Theft

A Beverly Hills resident, Jobson Marangoni De Castro, is scheduled to appear in court for an arraignment on charges involving the alleged theft of over $1.8 million worth of jewelry, clothing, and accessories from a couple staying at a high-end hotel in the city. The stolen items were subsequently taken to Florida for resale.

De Castro, 37, is facing charges of interstate transportation of stolen property, as reported by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

According to federal prosecutors, De Castro managed to obtain a key to the couple’s room at the Peninsula Beverly Hills hotel by deceiving one of the hotel’s employees. While the guests were dining, he made off with six suitcases, containing jewelry, clothing, and accessories with an estimated value exceeding $1.8 million, as detailed in court documents.

The couple, hailing from Brazil, had recently arrived in Los Angeles and chosen to stay at the Peninsula Beverly Hills hotel for a fashion event they were attending.

Following the theft, De Castro traveled to Miami and, on May 17, contacted a potential buyer, expressing a desire to sell jewelry, including a diamond necklace and luxury watch. He informed the buyer that he lacked proper documentation for these items, claiming he had found them in a box that belonged to his late mother, according to prosecutors.

The jewelry in question matched the description of the items stolen from the Beverly Hills hotel room, as stated by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

On May 18, the buyer wired $50,000 to De Castro for the jewelry, which De Castro subsequently delivered to the buyer’s store in Miami.

De Castro provided the name “Jobs Marangoni” to the buyer, the same name that was associated with his Uber account, according to court documents.

If convicted, De Castro could potentially face a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison.
