The UK government has revealed plans for a substantial expansion of nuclear power, marking what it claims to be the country’s most significant initiative in this sector in 70 years. Despite existing concerns about nuclear output issues and project delays, ministers released a roadmap outlining their commitment to constructing a fleet of nuclear reactors with a total capacity of 24GW by 2050, aiming to meet a quarter of the national electricity demand.

The proposed roadmap outlines the approval for one or two new reactors every five years from 2030 to 2044. It also supports the addition of another large-scale reactor alongside Hinkley Point C and the planned Sizewell C, even as uncertainties persist regarding project costs and timelines. This initiative aligns with the vision presented by former Prime Minister Boris Johnson in 2022, emphasizing the goal of building a new reactor annually to reduce the nation’s reliance on fossil fuels.

The announcement comes on the heels of concerns raised by the developer of Hinkley Point C, EDF, indicating a 30% increase in the project’s cost to £33bn. Furthermore, there are apprehensions about potential delays in Hinkley’s start date, pushing it from the initially planned summer of 2027 to the early 2030s.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak emphasized that this commitment to the nuclear industry represents a pivotal step in achieving the UK’s net-zero target by 2050 in a sustainable manner. Sunak highlighted the green and cost-effective nature of nuclear power, citing its potential to enhance energy security and stimulate economic growth while creating jobs and skills to benefit the entire country.

However, critics point to the challenges associated with the nuclear industry, citing historical instances of projects running overbudget and behind schedule. Some argue that the government’s investment should attract private sector funding, but doubts persist about the industry’s ability to significantly contribute to the UK’s energy security in the short term. Greenpeace UK’s chief scientist, Doug Parr, expressed skepticism, noting that the economic case for nuclear power appears less compelling compared to renewable energy sources, which are considered the future of the energy industry.
