CN has revealed plans to build a new intermodal terminal in Grundy County, Illinois, near the communities of Minooka and Channahon, to address the increasing demand for consumer goods in the Chicago area and the broader Midwest region.
The terminal, which will be privately funded, is designed to improve access to export markets in the U.S., Mexico, Canada, and beyond, connecting the area to key ports on the Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf coasts. Once operational, the project is expected to create approximately 6,500 permanent jobs and generate an estimated $20.9 million annually in real estate tax revenue. These funds are expected to support local schools, parks, libraries, and public safety services.
A public open house is scheduled for January 14, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Minooka High School South Campus, where residents can learn more about the project and raise questions.
In the short term, the project is set to create around 600 construction jobs. CN has stated that the terminal’s design will minimize traffic disruptions to surrounding roads. The company emphasizes that the terminal will contribute to local, state, and national economic growth, improve job opportunities, and enhance supply chain efficiency.
