JR East has set an ambitious target of ¥10 billion in freight transportation in the future.
Nonetheless, the plan has encountered some concerns from certain railway companies. Central Japan Railway Co. (JR Tokai) has expressed apprehension regarding possible disruptions to its passenger schedules, considering the high frequency of Tokaido Shinkansen trains. Additionally, Japan Freight Railway Co. (JR Freight) has voiced worries about potentially losing cargo traffic to the Shinkansen.
Despite these challenges, the project remains a focal point as Japan strives to tackle the ongoing logistics crisis, including the shortage of truck drivers. The government aims to double rail freight transport in the next decade, and analysts predict that the demand for Shinkansen-based cargo could reach 900 tons per day.
The success of this initiative will depend on its ability to attract sufficient cargo to offset the development costs of dedicated freight vehicles while fully capitalizing on the speed and efficiency of Shinkansen trains.
