African nations are emerging as potential contributors to the global semiconductor supply chain as demand for chips continues to expand across artificial intelligence, healthcare, electric vehicles, energy systems, telecommunications, manufacturing and agriculture.
Rather than focusing solely on advanced chip fabrication, African economies could strengthen their position across several stages of the semiconductor value chain, including electronics assembly, testing and packaging, components manufacturing, semiconductor design and minerals processing.
A regional approach could allow countries to develop specialized capabilities and connect them through cross-border supply networks. This strategy would help integrate Africa more deeply into global semiconductor value chains while creating new opportunities for industrial development, technology investment and skilled employment.
Several African economies already have capabilities that could support this expansion. Kenya is developing semiconductor-related initiatives, Morocco has established manufacturing capabilities linked to the automotive sector, South Africa has a strong industrial research base, Egypt is advancing semiconductor design and embedded systems, while Nigeria provides a large market for digital and technology-driven products.
Building a competitive semiconductor supply ecosystem will require investment in technical education, reliable energy, industrial infrastructure, research and development, and regional partnerships. African countries could also benefit from collaboration with professionals in the global African diaspora, particularly in engineering, investment, standards and technology.
The opportunity extends beyond producing chips. By developing capabilities in design, packaging, testing, components and electronics manufacturing, African economies can become important links in diversified global supply chains.
As semiconductor demand grows alongside AI and digital transformation, Africa has an opportunity to develop specialized supply-chain hubs that connect its talent, resources and markets with international technology networks.
