In January, despite a backdrop of multifaceted challenges including the ongoing Red Sea crisis, muted demand in advanced economies, and a downward trend in commodity prices, India’s merchandise exports demonstrated resilience, posting a modest growth of 3.2% year-on-year. This uptick marked a noteworthy achievement, particularly considering the prevailing global uncertainties.

Data released by the commerce department on Thursday revealed that the trade deficit widened slightly to $17.49 billion, up from $16.03 billion in December, as imports outpaced exports during the month. Imports into India amounted to $54.41 billion, showing a growth of 4.17% compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, exports totaled $36.92 billion, a slight increase from $35.78 billion recorded in January of the previous year. Government officials emphasized that export figures could have been even more robust had it not been for the disruptions caused by the Red Sea crisis.

Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal highlighted the government’s proactive measures to support exporters amidst the challenging environment. These measures included ensuring maximum credit availability and stable insurance rates for exporters. Barthwal expressed optimism about the potential for further export growth in the upcoming year, underscoring the resilience and adaptability of Indian exporters in navigating complex global trade dynamics. The Red Sea crisis, characterized by repeated attacks on ships by Iran-backed Houthi rebels of Yemen, has significantly disrupted global trade routes. This situation has forced commercial vessels to take longer routes, leading to increased freight costs and insurance premiums, thereby impacting trade flows.

In December, India’s exports stood at $38.45 billion. Cumulatively, exports for April-January of the financial year contracted by 4.89% to $351.92 billion, while imports decreased by 6.71% to $561.12 billion. Core exports, excluding petroleum and gems and jewellery, grew by 2.5% to $26.12 billion in January. Correspondingly, imports of non-petroleum and non-gems and jewellery declined by 5.18% to $33.72 billion during the same period. However, certain sectors experienced declines in exports, including gems and jewellery, readymade garments, manmade yarn, and jute, while others such as petroleum products, drugs and pharmaceuticals, electronic goods, and engineering goods saw increases.

Imports contracted in 17 out of 30 items, with notable decreases in transport equipment, project goods, and iron and steel. Gold imports recorded a significant jump of 173.63% in January, totaling $1.91 billion. Arun Kumar Garodia, Chairman of the Engineering Export Promotion Council India, acknowledged the challenges faced by exporters, including conflicts and uncertainties affecting global growth, container shortages, and high shipping costs. He remained cautiously optimistic about the short- and medium-term prospects for engineering goods exports.

In services trade, exports grew by 17% to $32.8 billion, while imports increased by 8.3% to $16.05 billion in January, resulting in a surplus of $16.75 billion. It’s worth noting that the services trade data for January is an estimate and subject to revision based on subsequent releases by the Reserve Bank of India. These figures indicate the continued strength of India’s services sector, which remains a key driver of the country’s economic growth and resilience in the face of global uncertainties.
