India’s coal imports fell by 3.1% to 149.39 million tonnes between April and October 2024, compared to 154.17 million tonnes during the same time last year. This decline happened even though there was a 3.87% increase in power generated from coal. The biggest drop was in coal used for blending by thermal power plants, which saw a sharp decrease of 19.5%. In contrast, coal produced within India rose by 6.04%, reaching 537.57 million tonnes. This increase shows ongoing efforts to enhance local coal production and make better use of resources.
The government’s push to boost domestic coal supply is part of a larger plan to ensure energy security and reduce reliance on imported coal.
