India has recently revoked the duty-free import benefits for solar power developers under the Manufacturing and Other Operations Warehousing Regulation (MOOWR) scheme. This move requires developers to pay duties when importing solar modules.
Previously, the MOOWR scheme allowed developers to designate their projects as bonded warehouses, enabling them to import solar modules without paying duties, as long as the modules remained within the bonded area or project site. However, certain developers had used this arrangement to circumvent import duties by stockpiling modules, leading to the revocation of these benefits. Industry experts suggest that this action aims to address the misuse of the scheme and ensure fair practices in solar module imports.
