The Indian government is embarking on a plan to transform India Post into a comprehensive logistics company, targeting a revenue increase of 50-60% over the next three to four years. Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced that the postal department’s current annual revenue is approximately ₹12,000 crore, with ambitions to significantly enhance this through diversification of services and leveraging its extensive reach in rural and remote areas. Minister Scindia emphasized the importance of evolving India Post beyond traditional mail services, advocating for innovations in logistics operations. The strategy will prioritize route optimization and the use of various transport methods to improve efficiency, enabling India Post to provide extensive logistics solutions and connect essential services to more remote populations.
The government is also investing heavily in infrastructure development in the Northeast region, with ₹48,000 crore allocated for road projects. Scindia noted ongoing efforts to enhance mobile connectivity in 25,000 villages nationwide, including 6,000 in the Northeast that currently lack network access. Through the Universal Service Obligation (USO) Fund, the government plans to install mobile towers in these areas by mid-2025, ensuring universal mobile connectivity. These initiatives are expected to facilitate India Post’s transformation and support the overall development of the country’s infrastructure.
