India and the United Arab Emirates have cemented an agreement regarding a trans-continental trade corridor, aiming to establish a robust connection between Europe and India through strategically selected regions of the Middle East, facilitated by both sea and rail routes. This substantial initiative, supported by key players such as the United States and the European Union, took shape during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Gulf state.

The formal announcement of this framework agreement, disseminated through a statement by the Indian foreign ministry, marks a significant milestone in regional connectivity efforts. However, specific details outlining the intricacies of the agreement were not publicly disclosed.

The statement from the Indian foreign ministry underscored that the agreement builds upon previous understandings and collaborative efforts between India and the UAE in this domain. It aims to bolster bilateral cooperation and enhance regional connectivity, further solidifying the longstanding relationship between the two nations.

The proposed corridor, initially introduced during discussions on the sidelines of the G20 summit in New Delhi last September, outlines an expansive route stretching from India across the Arabian Sea to the United Arab Emirates. From there, it is set to traverse Saudi Arabia before linking with Jordan and Israel on its journey to Europe.

While the ministry’s statement emphasizes the bilateral partnership between India and the UAE, it refrains from mentioning any other countries involved in the corridor project. Notably, India and the UAE share deep-rooted historical trade ties, spanning over a century and serving as a foundation for their present-day economic relations.

The formalization of the India-Middle East Economic Corridor agreement occurs amidst ongoing geopolitical complexities, including the protracted conflict in Gaza. This conflict has disrupted plans for further integration between Israel and its Arab neighbors, including Saudi Arabia, underscoring the significance of alternative trade routes such as the proposed corridor.

While the UAE foreign ministry has not provided detailed comments on the agreement, the meeting between Prime Minister Modi and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed al Nahyan reaffirms the importance of their bilateral relationship. Sheikh Mohamed’s remarks during the meeting express optimism about the future prospects of India-UAE relations, highlighting the resilience and depth of their partnership amid regional challenges.

Despite maintaining diplomatic relations with Israel since 2020 under the Abraham Accords, the UAE has also voiced concerns over Israel’s actions in Gaza, advocating for a ceasefire and expressing solidarity with the affected Palestinian population.

The signing of the framework agreement between India and the UAE reflects their shared commitment to advancing the corridor project, which has the potential to impact global trade infrastructure and pose a challenge to China’s Belt and Road connectivity strategy.

This agreement comes at a time when Yemen’s Houthi movement has intensified attacks on shipping vessels in the Red Sea, further emphasizing the importance of establishing alternative trade routes to mitigate risks associated with traditional sea routes.

In addition to the corridor agreement, India and the UAE have exchanged bilateral investment treaties and cooperation agreements covering various sectors, including electrical interconnection, trade facilitation, and digital infrastructure, further solidifying their economic partnership.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the UAE underscores the strategic importance of the relationship between India and the Gulf state, with India recognizing the UAE as one of its key trading partners. This visit marks Modi’s seventh trip to the UAE since assuming office nearly a decade ago, underscoring the sustained efforts to strengthen bilateral ties and deepen economic cooperation between the two nations.
