IMF Analysis Predicts Impact of AI on Jobs and Inequality

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has released a new analysis suggesting that artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to influence nearly 40% of all jobs, with potential consequences for inequality. Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva stated that, in most scenarios, AI may exacerbate overall inequality, emphasizing the need for policymakers to address this trend and prevent technology from further exacerbating social tensions.

According to the IMF, advanced economies are likely to experience a more significant impact, with AI affecting approximately 60% of jobs. In half of these cases, workers may benefit from increased productivity resulting from AI integration. However, in other instances, AI could replace tasks currently performed by humans, potentially reducing labor demand and impacting wages, even leading to job losses.

In contrast, the IMF projects that low-income countries will see AI affecting only 26% of jobs. Georgieva highlighted that many of these countries lack the necessary infrastructure and skilled workforce to harness AI’s benefits, raising concerns about potential increases in inequality among nations over time.

The analysis suggests that higher-income and younger workers may experience disproportionate wage increases with AI adoption. On the other hand, lower-income and older workers might face challenges, potentially falling behind in the changing job landscape.

To address these potential disparities, Georgieva stressed the importance of countries establishing comprehensive social safety nets and implementing retraining programs for vulnerable workers. This, she believes, can make the AI transition more inclusive, protecting livelihoods and mitigating inequality.

As discussions on AI gain prominence, global business and political leaders are addressing the topic at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. AI is attracting increased regulatory attention worldwide, with European Union officials recently reaching a provisional deal on comprehensive laws to regulate AI use. The European Parliament is expected to vote on the AI Act proposals later this year, with any legislation taking effect no earlier than 2025.
