During a meeting at the White House, tech executives in the United States received a call to action, emphasizing their “moral” responsibility to ensure that artificial intelligence (AI) development does not pose harm to society. The two-hour session, attended by CEOs from Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic, was convened at the invitation of US Vice President Kamala Harris.

While US President Joe Biden briefly participated in the meeting, he acknowledged the “enormous potential and enormous danger” associated with the work being carried out by tech companies. Biden urged the CEOs to share insights on what is needed to safeguard society and advance technology responsibly.

Vice President Harris emphasized that tech companies must adhere to existing laws to protect the American people and ensure the safety and security of their AI products. The meeting involved a “frank and constructive discussion” on the importance of tech firms being transparent with the government about their AI technology. Additionally, there was an emphasis on enhancing the safety of AI products and protecting them from potential malicious attacks, as stated by the White House.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, speaking to reporters after the meeting, noted that there was surprising alignment on the necessary steps that need to be taken in AI development.

This meeting coincided with the Biden administration’s announcement of a $140 million investment in seven new AI research institutes, the creation of an independent committee for public assessments of existing AI systems, and plans to establish guidelines for the federal government’s use of AI.

The rapid advancement of AI has generated excitement and concerns within the tech industry, with fears of potential societal harm and the technology slipping out of developers’ control. The Biden administration’s focus on transparency, safety, and collaboration with the tech industry reflects the recognition of the evolving landscape of AI and its implications for society.
