India’s Shift Towards Zero-Emission Trucks: Implications for Clean Mobility

by Raxer X.

in Industry, Logistics & Transportation

India’s trucking industry, responsible for transporting 68% of the nation’s road freight, is poised for significant growth. Projections indicate that road freight demand will increase fourfold by 2050, driven by rising logistics and transportation needs. Currently, approximately 320,000 new trucks are sold annually, with expectations of continued growth in the coming decades. This scenario presents a pivotal opportunity to integrate zero-emission trucks (ZETs) into the expanding fleet.

Zero-emission trucks, encompassing battery-electric trucks, hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks, and hydrogen internal combustion engine trucks, offer several benefits:

  • Public Health Improvement: Despite comprising only 3% of India’s total vehicle fleet, diesel trucks contribute to 53% of particulate matter pollution. Transitioning to ZETs can significantly enhance air quality, particularly along urban freight corridors.
  • Economic Efficiency: ZETs can reduce fuel costs by up to 46% over a vehicle’s lifetime, thereby lowering transportation expenses, which constitute 62% of India’s logistics costs. This shift can lead to substantial economic savings.
  • Energy and Economic Security: The road freight sector consumes over 25% of India’s annual oil imports. Adopting ZETs could decrease diesel consumption by 838 billion liters by 2050, potentially saving up to ₹116 lakh crore (approximately US$1.5 trillion) in oil expenditures.
  • Environmental Impact: The trucking sector accounts for one-third of transport-related COâ‚‚ emissions in India. A concerted transition to ZETs could prevent 2.8–3.8 gigatons of cumulative carbon emissions through 2050.

Recent Developments and Initiatives

Several initiatives underscore India’s commitment to integrating zero-emission trucks:

  • World Economic Forum’s Zero-Emissions Road Freight Cluster: In July 2023, the World Economic Forum, in collaboration with partners, announced the development of India’s first zero-emissions road freight cluster. This initiative aims to deploy over 550 zero-emission trucks within 18 to 24 months along key corridors in Gujarat and Maharashtra.
  • Blue Energy Motors’ Expansion Plans: Blue Energy Motors, an Indian startup specializing in liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fueled trucks, plans to raise $100 million by January 2025 to expand its production capacity. The company aims to triple its sales to 3,000 LNG-powered trucks in the next financial year and is set to launch its first electric truck soon.
  • Government Incentives for Electric Vehicles: In September 2024, India’s cabinet approved a ₹109 billion (approximately $1.3 billion) incentive scheme to promote the adoption of electric vehicles. This initiative includes subsidies for various electric vehicles, such as two-wheelers, three-wheelers, ambulances, and trucks, with a specific allocation of ₹5 billion for e-trucks.

Challenges and Considerations

Despite the potential benefits, the transition to zero-emission trucks faces challenges:

  • High Upfront Costs: ZETs currently have higher initial costs compared to traditional diesel trucks, which can deter fleet operators from adopting them.
  • Infrastructure Development: The lack of widespread charging and refueling infrastructure poses operational challenges for ZET deployment.
  • Financing and Risk Management: Addressing financing challenges, such as high upfront costs, market risks, and uncertainty around residual value, is crucial. A comprehensive approach to mitigating these risks is necessary to unlock capital for ZETs.

Conclusion

The integration of zero-emission trucks into India’s transportation sector presents a significant opportunity to enhance public health, achieve economic savings, bolster energy security, and reduce environmental impact. While challenges exist, ongoing initiatives by the government and private sector indicate a concerted effort to overcome these obstacles and promote sustainable mobility solutions.
