The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has marked a significant milestone as it commemorates two decades of guiding the safe and secure import and export of radioactive sources. Established in 2004, the IAEA’s Code of Conduct on the Safety and Security of Radioactive Sources has played a pivotal role in promoting global adherence to rigorous safety protocols.

Under the framework of this code, the IAEA has worked closely with member states to establish comprehensive guidelines aimed at preventing unauthorized access to radioactive materials and ensuring their safe transportation across borders. These guidelines are crucial in mitigating potential risks associated with the misuse or mishandling of radioactive sources, which could pose significant health, safety, and security threats.

Over the past two decades, the IAEA’s efforts have been instrumental in enhancing international cooperation and harmonization of regulations pertaining to radioactive materials. By fostering collaboration among nations, the agency has facilitated the exchange of best practices and technical expertise in managing radioactive sources effectively.

The anniversary underscores the ongoing commitment of the IAEA to continuously improve global nuclear safety and security standards. Through its sustained efforts, the agency continues to reinforce the importance of adherence to international guidelines in safeguarding against the illicit trafficking of radioactive materials.

Moving forward, the IAEA remains dedicated to supporting member states in implementing robust measures to ensure the safe handling, storage, and transport of radioactive sources. By promoting a culture of safety and accountability, the agency aims to further strengthen the global nuclear security architecture and minimize potential risks associated with radioactive materials worldwide.
