Solomon Islands’ opposition leader Matthew Wale is urging the nation’s police commissioner to provide full disclosure regarding a controversial shipment from China last year. This call for transparency follows an Al Jazeera report revealing that US diplomats suspected the shipment, purportedly containing “replica” firearms for training, actually consisted of real pistols and rifles.

The US embassy in Papua New Guinea, in a diplomatic cable obtained by Al Jazeera, noted that the firearms appeared genuine, with unique serial numbers. This contradicts the Solomon Islands government’s claim that the shipment was intended solely for training purposes. Additionally, US officials raised concerns about the weapons being offloaded at night and the lack of proper documentation.

Peter Kenilorea Jr, an opposition MP, echoed these concerns and called for a commission of inquiry to investigate the matter thoroughly.

The Solomon Islands government, led by Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare, has not yet responded to these latest revelations. However, Collin Beck, head of the country’s foreign ministry, dismissed the Al Jazeera report, labeling it as part of a “divisive narrative” and denying allegations of receiving arms from China.

The opposition’s skepticism stems in part from Solomon Islands’ deepening ties with China, including a security cooperation agreement and the discontinuation of diplomatic recognition of Taiwan. This shift in allegiance has caused unease among officials in the US, Australia, and New Zealand, due to the strategic significance of Pacific Island nations.

The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) has not responded to Al Jazeera’s request for comment, and the Prime Minister’s Office has yet to address questions about the allegations made by US officials.
