DAVAO CITY – Exhibitors from the Davao Region realized an impressive $1.5 billion in sales at the 7th China International Import Expo (CIIE), which took place from November 5 to 10, 2024, in Shanghai, China, as reported by the Department of Agriculture for the Davao Region (DA-11).
The event showcased eight companies from the region: Maylong Enterprises Corp., EngSeng Food Products, SQ Fresh Fruits Corp., BJM-Plouteo Agricultural Export Trading, Fruta Asiatica Export and Agri-Trading, Mei He W-Plus Food Processing Inc., GERB Golden Hands Corporation, and Avante Agri-Products Phils. Inc.
A notable highlight was the enthusiastic reception of Davao’s durian, recognized for its sweet and creamy texture. DA-11 senior agriculturist Alexander Sibuan indicated that a durian tasting survey conducted during the expo revealed that 80 percent of participants expressed enjoyment of the Philippine durian varieties.
The durian industry in the Davao Region has been gaining traction since April 2023, when 18 metric tons of the fruit were initially shipped to China. Varieties such as Puyat, D-101, Cob, and Duyaya were introduced to the Chinese market, thereby facilitating increased agricultural exports.
Chinese Commercial Consul Jin Jun, representing Consul General Zhao Xiuzhen of the Chinese Consulate General in Davao, commended the strengthening agricultural ties between the two nations. She emphasized that the Chinese market offers significant opportunities for collaboration, especially in the durian industry, which could enhance production and improve the livelihoods of farmers in the region.
On November 12, DA-11 undertook an evaluation of the region’s performance at the expo, concentrating on areas for improvement. Key challenges identified included the necessity for standardized durian quality, enhanced post-harvest practices, and the implementation of advanced business tools such as maturity detection equipment to optimize processes.
The success at the CIIE reflects the Davao Region’s potential within the international agricultural market and highlights the importance of ongoing efforts to address logistical and quality standards for sustained growth.
