A recent global warehousing report has revealed a significant shift in operational focus among supply chain leaders, with 93 % of warehouse decision‑makers identifying throughput improvement as a top priority for return on investment (ROI) in 2025. The findings highlight how performance metrics are influencing investment and technology strategies across logistics facilities worldwide.
The State of Warehouse Management and Fulfillment 2025 survey, conducted among more than 300 executives responsible for supply chain operations, indicates that throughput — the rate at which goods move through a facility — has jumped sharply in importance compared with previous years. In fact, it climbed from the eighth‑highest priority in 2024 to the fourth position in 2025.
Automation adoption is near‑ubiquitous, with 97 % of respondents reporting some level of automated processes in their warehouses. However, nearly half of those surveyed estimate that less than half of their operations are fully automated, pointing to continued growth potential for automated systems and technologies that boost handling capacity.
The report also underscores the vital role of advanced software tools in optimising warehouse performance. Integrated software systems that connect diverse automated equipment can significantly enhance metrics such as bin retrieval speeds and order batching, which in turn accelerate throughput and support higher ROI.
Moreover, logistics professionals emphasise that flexible software architectures are crucial for responding to evolving customer demands — especially in omnichannel fulfilment environments — and for balancing throughput with storage space efficiency. Seamless data integration across systems is increasingly seen as a competitive differentiator in modern fulfilment networks.
As global supply chains adjust to rising e‑commerce volumes and tighter performance expectations, warehouse operations are placing even greater emphasis on speed, adaptability, and technology‑driven optimisation to meet future challenges.
