United States Strengthens Tungsten Supply

by Jessica Jumaway
09/15/2026
in Supply chain and Logistics

The United States is expanding domestic tungsten production and processing capacity through a $450 million government backed investment aimed at strengthening access to the critical mineral.

The funding will support the restart of a tungsten mining and processing complex in Nevada, with $150 million allocated to the project. Additional investment will support tungsten manufacturing facilities in Maine, Michigan, and Ohio, helping increase production capacity and modernize critical industrial infrastructure.

Production at the Nevada mine and mill is expected to restart by the end of 2027, while a processing facility for ammonium paratungstate is expected to begin operations by mid 2028. These developments are designed to strengthen connections between mining, processing, manufacturing, and downstream industries.

A new refining and trading division will also coordinate sourcing, refining, and delivery activities across a broader network of tungsten suppliers. Partnerships involving mining operations in Australia and Spain are expected to contribute to a more diversified international supply network.

Tungsten is widely used across defense, aerospace, energy, medical, and advanced manufacturing applications. Expanding domestic production and processing capacity can provide manufacturers with more reliable access to essential materials while supporting long term industrial planning.

A separate government contract valued at up to $2 billion will establish a long term framework for supplying tungsten ores, concentrates, and processed materials. The agreement includes a guaranteed $150 million commitment and an initial five year ordering period through August 2031, with an option to extend for another two years.

Together, the investments and supply agreements are expected to strengthen the United States tungsten network by connecting domestic production with international sourcing, processing, and manufacturing capabilities.
