Macao has launched a pilot cross border land air logistics service designed to strengthen cargo connectivity between Hengqin, Macao International Airport, and international destinations.
The first shipment under the pilot involved cross border electronic commerce goods, including toys and watches. The cargo was transported from a logistics center in Hengqin to the upstream cargo terminal, completed customs procedures at Hengqin Port, and then moved directly to Macao International Airport for air shipment to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The new model integrates land transportation, customs processing, cargo security inspection, palletization, and air freight into a coordinated logistics flow. This approach is designed to improve cargo handling efficiency and strengthen connections between regional distribution centers and international markets.
The Hengqin upstream cargo terminal is expected to further support this integrated model when it begins operations in 2027. Located about 13 kilometers from Macao International Airport, the facility is planned to have an annual air cargo handling capacity of approximately 300,000 tons.
The initiative also supports the development of a broader logistics ecosystem covering transportation, customs services, inspection, and financial settlement. By connecting Hengqin’s logistics infrastructure with Macao’s aviation network, the project is expected to expand air cargo capacity and create additional opportunities for cross border electronic commerce and international trade.
The development highlights the growing role of multimodal transportation and integrated logistics infrastructure in connecting regional supply chains with global markets.
