SVB Financial Group, the former owner of the now-bankrupt Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), has filed a lawsuit against the United States Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). The lawsuit aims to recover more than $1.9 billion, which SVB Financial claims the FDIC has wrongfully withheld following the takeover of its banking division.

According to the lawsuit, filed in New York on Sunday and reported by the Financial Times, SVB Financial alleges that the FDIC’s retention of $1.93 billion in cash is a violation of U.S. bankruptcy law. The group argues that this action hinders its ability to reorganize and continues to cause ongoing harm. The FDIC has not yet responded to the lawsuit.

The FDIC took control of Silicon Valley Bank’s assets in March, in what was the largest bank collapse since Washington Mutual during the 2008 financial crisis. At the time of its seizure, SVB was ranked as the 16th largest bank in the U.S., with assets and deposits totaling $209 billion and $175.4 billion, respectively.

The collapse of SVB, primarily serving the tech industry, was triggered by a sudden surge in deposit withdrawals after the bank unexpectedly announced a need for $2.25 billion to strengthen its balance sheet. This incident raised concerns about the broader health of the U.S. banking sector, though the repercussions were largely contained to the failure of several other mid-sized banks.
