A Filipina woman has reached out to the Philippine government for help, saying she is being forced to stay with scam operators in Myanmar. She claims that she was promised a real job through social media, but once she got there, she was made to take part in online scams.
This situation is part of a larger issue of human trafficking affecting Filipinos in Southeast Asia. In April 2024, six people were brought back to the Philippines after being lured into scam operations in Myanmar. These individuals had traveled as tourists in 2023 and reported that they were paid very little, if at all, and faced both physical and mental abuse. Bureau of Immigration Commissioner Norman Tansingco warned about the dangers of accepting questionable job offers overseas, stressing that many Filipinos still fall for these traps despite the many warnings.
In May 2024, nine more Filipinos were returned home after being promised good jobs but ending up working in scams in Myanmar and Laos. Like the previous victims, they were recruited via social media and were forced to participate in online fraud under harsh conditions. Some reported physical mistreatment and threats, including beatings and being forced to work harder when they didn’t meet scam targets.
The Philippine government is taking steps to tackle these problems. In May 2023, the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC) helped rescue six Filipinos who were trafficked to Myanmar under false job promises. These individuals successfully escaped and received help from Philippine officials to return home. The PAOCC, along with other agencies, is continuing to investigate and prosecute those behind these deceptive recruitment practices.
Authorities are advising Filipino job seekers to be careful and to check the legitimacy of job offers, especially those found on social media. The government is dedicated to helping victims and strengthening efforts against human trafficking and related scams.
