Federal Agency Hacked Due to Outdated Software

The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has issued a warning following a cybersecurity breach at a federal government agency. This breach was made possible due to the exploitation of a vulnerability in outdated Adobe ColdFusion software, which is used for building web applications. The agency in question was using software that had reached its end-of-life stage, meaning it no longer received any support or security updates from Adobe.

The cyberattacks occurred in June and July, targeting the agency’s public-facing servers running this obsolete software. End-of-life software is inherently risky as it cannot be updated or patched, making it vulnerable to cyber threats.

CISA’s investigation revealed that the attackers conducted reconnaissance activities within the agency’s network. However, there is no evidence to suggest that malware was installed or that data was exfiltrated. The extent of the breach was primarily exploratory, as per CISA’s analysis.

Despite the inability to confirm if the same hackers were responsible for both attacks, CISA noted that Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, a native antivirus software for Windows, detected potential exploitation and contained the hackers’ activities.

CISA had previously mandated in March that all federal agencies patch the known Adobe ColdFusion vulnerability (CVE-2023-26360). The recent incident underscores the critical importance of maintaining updated and supported software across all government networks to prevent similar security breaches.
