On April 1, 2025, parcel delivery company Evri unveiled plans to trial an autonomous robotic delivery dog, a project set to begin in the summer of 2025. This new initiative is part of Evri’s ongoing efforts to enhance last-mile delivery operations.
The robotic delivery dog, developed by RIVR, an AI company focused on revolutionizing last-mile delivery, will work in conjunction with human couriers. The robot is designed to assist couriers by hopping in and out of delivery vans, taking on some of the walking duties during parcel deliveries.
In addition to the robotic dog trial, Evri will also be testing other robotic solutions aimed at supporting couriers. One such trial will involve a small electric vehicle robot developed by Delivers AI, which will operate from Barnsley Business Innovation Centre in Yorkshire. This robot will be used to deliver parcels on a daily basis, and residents on selected streets in Barnsley will have the option to participate in the trial over a three-month period.
The introduction of these robots offers the potential for deliveries to be made around the clock, providing greater flexibility for consumers who may need additional time to receive their parcels.
Barnsley Council has expressed its support for the trial, highlighting its alignment with the town’s efforts to become a leading digital hub in the UK. The initiative is part of Evri’s broader strategy to innovate and complement traditional courier services with advanced technologies that can improve delivery efficiency.
Evri’s Chief Technology Officer emphasized that while robots will not replace human couriers, they are part of the company’s ongoing commitment to supporting couriers and enhancing the speed and convenience of delivery services. The trials are expected to explore new ways to improve delivery flexibility and offer consumers more options.
