Kazakhstan and the European Union have reinforced their commitment to developing the Middle Corridor and promoting sustainable logistics, as they discuss joint efforts to improve regional transport and infrastructure connectivity.
Murat Nurtleu, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan, met with Eduards Stiprais, the EU Special Representative for Central Asia, during Stiprais’ working visit to Kazakhstan. The meeting focused on green transformation initiatives, transport, and logistics connectivity, emphasizing the importance of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (Middle Corridor).
The two sides discussed ongoing cooperation under the Agreement on Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation between Kazakhstan and the EU. Topics included strengthening economic ties, expanding investment opportunities, and enhancing regional security. The upcoming “Central Asia – European Union” Summit, scheduled to take place in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, was also highlighted as a key opportunity for further collaboration.
Nurtleu reaffirmed Kazakhstan’s commitment to deepening its partnership with the European Union, recognizing the strategic role the EU plays in Kazakhstan’s economic development. Stiprais commended the progress in bilateral relations, particularly Kazakhstan’s role in advancing interregional cooperation and implementing critical infrastructure and economic projects.
Following the meeting, both parties agreed to continue their constructive dialogue on these issues to further strengthen ties.
The EU remains Kazakhstan’s largest trade and investment partner. In 2024, the trade turnover between Kazakhstan and the EU reached $49.7 billion, a 16.9% increase from the previous year. Kazakhstan’s exports to the EU amounted to $38.6 billion, while imports totaled $11.1 billion. Since 2005, the EU has invested over $200.7 billion in Kazakhstan, accounting for nearly half of the total foreign direct investment in the country.
