Ethiopia has launched an initiative to manufacture unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for both defense and commercial purposes, with plans to explore export opportunities. The country’s leadership has emphasized the role of drone production in advancing domestic technological capabilities and strengthening national security.
Launch of Sky Wing Industry
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed recently inaugurated Sky Wing Industry, a company focused on producing drones for multiple applications. During the event, he highlighted the significance of this development, noting that locally manufactured UAVs were once considered unattainable but have now become a reality.
“Our ability to produce drones with diverse capabilities—designed and built by our own young professionals—is a significant milestone,” the Prime Minister stated. He emphasized the need for continued investment in research and innovation to enhance drone production and expand market opportunities.
Drone Capabilities and Applications
The domestically produced drones are designed to operate at high altitudes and are equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) technology for enhanced efficiency. They also include counter-drone capabilities aimed at addressing airborne security threats. According to officials, the UAVs can support a range of functions, including defensive operations, surveillance, and intelligence gathering.
Potential for Export and Industry Growth
While the drones are intended primarily for national security, Ethiopia has also expressed interest in exporting them to international markets. Prime Minister Abiy stated that the country is focused on developing advanced defense technologies to enhance stability rather than escalate conflicts.
To further strengthen Ethiopia’s presence in drone innovation, the government has encouraged research collaborations and investment in sensor technology and other smart systems.
The expansion of Ethiopia’s UAV manufacturing sector reflects broader efforts to develop the country’s defense and technology industries, positioning it as an emerging player in the global drone market.
