Risky Side of AI Implementation in Warehousing: What Supply Chain Leaders Need to Know

KEY POINTS Supply chain challenges persist across industries, posing difficulties for manufacturers, suppliers, distribution partners, and consumers. However, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR) tools holds the promise of alleviating these challenges, bringing about significant efficiencies for logistics providers.

Issues such as inadequate planning capabilities leading to supply-demand mismatches and increased operational costs are prevalent. Additionally, unsuccessful B2B integrations with software systems and a general inability to respond to unforeseen changes contribute to the complexities faced by supply chains.

Leading logistics and supply chain organizations are turning to AI tools and analytics to address key areas for improvement. Algorithm-based data resources play a crucial role in identifying potential disruptions in the supply chain, changes in customer demand, and deviations from planned strategies. AI-driven data analytics, supported by natural-language processors like ChatGPT, are instrumental in forecasting demand and developing warehouse and order planning strategies.

Furthermore, AR/VR headsets are utilized for monitoring orders, inventory, shipments, and tracking working hours, suggesting break times to keep workers alert. For logistics providers, AR/VR technology enables real-time 3D visualization and computer-assisted design (CAD), leading to faster training cycles.

Companies employing AR/VR technology report fewer errors through instructions overlay, remote assistance, and improved planning and visualization, resulting in productivity increases of over 40% in some instances.

Facility managers should be mindful that not all automation systems are equal, emphasizing the importance of choosing a cloud-enabled platform. Cloud-based AR/VR platforms, powered by distributed architecture and 3D vision-based AI, enable logistics companies to drive innovation with speed and scale.

While AR/VR technologies have been in use for several years, some companies opt for virtual systems built on on-premise environments with locally stored data. However, on-premise infrastructures pose limitations in speed, scalability, and knowledge sharing compared to cloud-based alternatives.

As logistics companies increasingly adopt AI technologies such as predictive modeling and natural language processors like ChatGPT, the integration of AR/VR virtualization is poised to further enhance the efficiency of supply chains.
