In a bid to strengthen trade ties and explore opportunities for collaboration, the UK’s Minister for Trade Policy, MP Greg Hands, embarked on a visit to Jersey, where he engaged in a series of discussions with the island’s newly appointed Chief Minister. This meeting signifies MP Hands’ return to Jersey since his last visit in September 2021, a two-day tour aimed at familiarizing himself with the island’s economic landscape. Building upon this foundation, his recent visit prioritized dialogue with Chief Minister Deputy Lyndon Farnham to delve into the intricacies of potential trade agreements that could benefit Jersey.

As Deputy Farnham undertook his inaugural official engagement as Chief Minister, he actively participated in discussions with MP Hands, exploring avenues for Jersey’s integration into broader trade frameworks. The talks encompassed not only the immediate benefits but also the long-term strategic implications for the island’s economy. Beyond governmental interactions, MP Hands also took the opportunity to engage directly with local businesses, seeking firsthand insights into their needs and challenges. A notable visit to a potato farm in St Ouen provided a platform for discussions on the unique obstacles faced by agricultural enterprises in Crown Dependencies like Jersey. This grassroots engagement underscores the UK’s commitment to understanding and addressing the specific concerns of local industries.

Expanding the scope of his visit, MP Hands extended his diplomatic outreach to Guernsey on Thursday, February 1st. There, he engaged in discussions with local political figures to explore the potential role of the Bailiwick in supporting UK Trade Deals. This comprehensive approach reflects the UK government’s holistic strategy towards fostering economic cooperation with its Crown Dependencies. The backdrop of Brexit has inevitably raised concerns regarding trade relations between the Channel Islands and the UK. In response, MP Hands offered reassurances, emphasizing the UK’s commitment to inclusivity in trade agreements. Notably, ongoing negotiations with the Gulf Cooperation Council were highlighted, with efforts underway to ensure the participation of Crown Dependencies like Jersey.

During his visit to Guernsey, MP Hands seized the opportunity to meet with Deputy Lyndon Trott, Guernsey’s Chief Minister, alongside other political representatives. Discussions encompassed the significant contributions of Guernsey’s financial services industry to the UK economy and global trade partnerships. Deputy Trott articulated strategic priorities for Guernsey’s economy and its positioning in a rapidly evolving global landscape. In essence, this visit serves as a pivotal moment for constructive dialogue between UK officials and leaders of Crown Dependencies. It not only underscores the importance of collaboration on trade matters but also signals a commitment to forging enduring partnerships that facilitate mutual prosperity and economic resilience.”
