Ecuador’s National Assembly has officially ratified a free trade agreement with China, garnering approval from 76 out of 137 lawmakers in a significant move aimed at bolstering economic ties between the two nations. Signed during the Guillermo Lasso administration in 2023, this agreement solidifies Ecuador’s position as the fourth Latin American country to establish a free trade pact with China, following the footsteps of Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru.

Expected to take effect in the latter half of this year, pending completion of requisite procedures by both nations, the agreement signifies a deepening of economic cooperation and mutual benefit. According to data from the central bank, China currently ranks as Ecuador’s second most vital trade partner, trailing only behind the United States. Notably, Ecuador exported goods worth US$5.29 billion to China between January and November of the previous year, while importing goods valued at US$5.07 billion during the same period.

During a presentation to the National Assembly, Production Minister Sonsoles García outlined key provisions of the agreement, including the establishment of 820 exclusionary measures and transition periods lasting up to 20 years. These measures are intended to safeguard sensitive sectors and support the local industry amid the agreement’s implementation, ensuring a smooth transition into the new trade framework.

Beyond trade, Chinese involvement in Ecuador extends to various sectors, demonstrating a multifaceted partnership. Chinese companies are actively engaged in Ecuador’s oil fields and some mines, including the Mirador copper mine owned by EcuaCorriente and the Fruta del Norte mine owned by Lundin Gold. Furthermore, China has played a significant role in Ecuador’s infrastructure development, with projects such as the Coca Codo Sinclair hydroelectric plant serving as prominent examples of this collaboration.

The ratification of the free trade agreement underscores Ecuador’s commitment to fostering economic growth and diversification through strategic partnerships, while also acknowledging the potential benefits and challenges that come with closer ties to the world’s second-largest economy.
