Ecuador has commenced fruit exports to Argentina, dispatching a shipment comprising 24 tonnes of Hass avocados and 11.5 tonnes of red dragon fruit. This development is the outcome of collaborative efforts between the private sector and public institutions, notably Agrocalidad, Ecuador’s agency responsible for animal and plant health regulation. Marco Oviedo, Vice Minister of Rural Development, highlighted that this new export avenue results from joint initiatives aimed at enhancing market access for Ecuadorian produce. Agrocalidad’s Executive Director, Patricio Almeida, emphasized the positive impact on small-scale producers, noting that entering the Argentine market offers expanded opportunities for local agriculture. The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) indicated that this initial shipment is anticipated to bolster Ecuador’s fruit and vegetable sector, providing economic benefits and fostering growth among local producers. Projections suggest that export volumes to Argentina will increase in the forthcoming months. Current agricultural data reveals that Ecuador cultivates over 7,000 hectares of avocados and more than 8,000 hectares of dragon fruit. In 2024, the nation exported 2,788 tonnes of avocados to 12 international markets and 47,798 tonnes of dragon fruit to 20 countries worldwide. This milestone in Ecuador-Argentina trade relations reflects a broader trend of South American countries enhancing regional agricultural exchanges. For instance, Argentina recently gained access to the Ecuadorian market for its lemons and sweet citrus fruits, following successful negotiations and agreements on export protocols. The mutual opening of markets between Ecuador and Argentina signifies a strategic effort to diversify export destinations and strengthen economic ties within the region. Such initiatives are poised to contribute to the resilience and expansion of the agricultural sectors in both countries.
