DroneDash Technologies, based in Singapore, and Malaysia’s Aerodyne Group have announced their collaboration on a trial project aimed at facilitating cargo delivery between the two countries using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The agreement, signed at the Singapore Airshow 2024, proposes the introduction of small-scale commercial deliveries between Singapore and Malaysia, specifically Johor Bahru and Iskandar.
Though the initiative is still pending regulatory approval in both countries, the companies intend to commence the trial in the third quarter of 2024. CEO of DroneDash, Paul Yam, mentioned that both entities are currently navigating the regulatory processes in their respective nations.
While many drone delivery trials have been conducted within countries, cross-border trials are unprecedented. According to DroneDash, this mode of delivery is anticipated to be four times faster than conventional land or sea methods, with significantly lower carbon emissions, up to 92 percent less.
The planned delivery service will primarily focus on transporting smaller shipments with higher value, including electronics, medical supplies, and perishable food items. Drones capable of carrying up to 30 kilograms of cargo will be deployed for these purposes. The UAVs are scheduled to take off and land at seaports to comply with customs clearance requirements. Yam emphasized that the deliveries are intended to be autonomous, with human intervention reserved for exceptional circumstances.
DroneDash is currently in discussions with potential logistics partners for participation in the trials. While the precise duration of the trial remains undetermined, Yam estimates it to last at least a year or more, with potential expansion to additional Malaysian locations in the future.
As of November 2023, the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore has been collaborating with regional counterparts to establish safety regulations and standards for air taxi and drone operations. The aim is to develop a regulatory framework by 2025, providing guidelines for such operations.
