DHL Freight has launched two new duo trailers for transporting goods between its terminals in Madrid and Barcelona. Each duo trailer consists of two semi-trailers connected together, making them 31.75 meters long, which is the longest road transport option available in Europe right now.
These duo trailers are designed to improve transportation and help reduce their impact on the environment. DHL states that by using Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fuel, emissions can be cut by up to 90%.
Because of their size and weight, duo trailers have to follow certain rules. They require special permits and can only operate on specific routes within the country. The semi-trailers can also work independently, thanks to special features that allow them to connect and operate with ease. The front trailer has a reinforced chassis to help manage the forces from braking and towing.
Currently, these trailers are used to transport goods from Madrid to Barcelona, with some cargo eventually heading to Freiburg, Germany. In this case, the rear trailer can travel on its own for part of the journey.
This effort is part of a larger trend in the logistics industry focused on improving efficiency and sustainability. For example, Denmark has been testing trucks that can carry two semi-trailers at once, which may lead to more efficient and eco-friendly transportation.
DHL Freight’s use of duo trailers marks an important move towards more sustainable and efficient freight transport in Europe.
