DHL Express Portugal has opened a new facility at Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport in Porto, following an investment of over €25 million. This expansion significantly boosts the company’s capacity to support the export industry in the North and Central regions of Portugal. The new facility spans more than 18,000 square meters and will triple DHL’s operational capacity at the airport. It can now handle up to 6,500 pieces per hour for imports, a 150% increase, and 5,000 pieces per hour for exports, a 300% rise. The terminal is equipped with advanced automation systems, including X-rays and automatic weighing and measuring equipment, designed to streamline processing and improve the speed and security of shipments.
The added capacity will allow DHL to support double-digit growth in annual volumes, strengthening its position in the logistics sector within Portugal. DHL is also integrating sustainability measures into the new facility. It features 130 loading bays for DHL vans, 119 of which are equipped for electric vehicles. The building is outfitted with solar panels, along with advanced lighting and ventilation systems, to enhance energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. “Portugal has seen strong economic performance in recent years, driven by robust export growth, and DHL Express is committed to supporting the country’s long-term trade development,” said Mike Parra, CEO of DHL Express Europe. “Our investments in capacity, combined with new technology for efficiency and sustainability, will help improve the competitiveness of our customers in Portugal.”
