Detwiler’s Farm Market, a local grocery business, is expanding its distribution capabilities with the construction of a new 133,000-square-foot warehouse and distribution facility in Ellenton’s large industrial park. Detwiler’s Farm Market has experienced significant growth in the Sarasota-Manatee region since its early days operating from a small tent at Sutter Egg Farm in Sarasota. “This is something we’ve been working on for a long time,” said Sam Detwiler, president of Detwiler’s Farm Market, in a news release regarding the facility’s groundbreaking. “Our goal is to lower prices and continue to uphold our ‘Eat Fresh for Less’ motto.”
Over the past 20 years, the company’s expanding grocery business has created a need for a larger distribution network. At the end of last year, Detwiler’s opened its sixth grocery store at 3500 53rd Ave. in Bradenton in a 55,000-square-foot space. This followed the 2019 opening of a 44,000-square-foot location at Merchants Pointe plaza at Clark and Swift Roads. In September 2023, the company celebrated the reopening of the Palmer Ranch Detwiler’s after Hurricane Ian caused extensive damage to their first brick-and-mortar store.
The new distribution center aims to consolidate the company’s network. “We’re looking forward to all being under one roof in our new distribution center so we can serve our customers even better,” said company founder Henry Detwiler Sr. in the news release. The new facility will be located at Benderson Development’s Florida International Tradeport in Palmetto, near the Interstate 75 and U.S. 301 interchange by the Manatee River. The planned 2-million-square-foot industrial park has nearly a mile of frontage on I-75. The Florida International Tradeport currently has 12 fully leased buildings, with plans to build eight more this year.
Benderson Development, founded in 1949 in Buffalo, New York, and headquartered in Manatee County, owns more than 1,000 properties in 41 states, totaling over 55 million square feet of commercial space, according to the news release.
