Throughout October, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will be emphasizing the importance of cybersecurity in acknowledgment of Cybersecurity Awareness Month. The aim is to inform the public and various sectors about potential cyber threats and the measures to counteract them.

DHS, comprising multiple agencies, is working to enhance national cybersecurity resilience across both public and private sectors. These efforts encompass investigating potential cyber threats and promoting cybersecurity in alignment with the country’s principles.
Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas stated, “The Department of Homeland Security collaborates with various sectors, including the private sector, to provide guidance on enhancing cybersecurity. Our goal is to advise a wide array of entities, from federal civilian departments and agencies to schools and election officials. Public-private cooperation is crucial for our efforts.”

DHS has introduced several cybersecurity programs, such as the Joint Cyber Defense Collaborative, Shields Up, the Cyber Safety Review Board, and has allocated $1 billion in cybersecurity grants for regional partners.

A brief overview of the roles of some of the DHS agencies:

  • The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency focuses on understanding and mitigating risks to both cyber and physical infrastructure.
  • Transportation Security Administration works on strengthening cyber resilience across transportation networks through regulations and collaborations.
  • The United States Coast Guard is responsible for countering cyber threats and safeguarding U.S. maritime interests.
  • The United States Secret Service investigates various cybercrimes, including network breaches, frauds, and scams.
  • Immigration and Customs Enforcement – Homeland Security Investigations offers technical support for investigations into cyber-related cross-border crimes, with a special unit dedicated to preventing child exploitation.
  • The Office of Policy coordinates cyber incident reporting requirements at the federal level and collaborates with international partners to enhance global cybersecurity.
  • The Office of the Chief Information Officer works to bolster cybersecurity practices within the DHS.

CISA Director Jen Easterly mentioned, “Cybersecurity is as much about people as it is about technology. This year’s theme, ‘See Yourself in Cyber’, emphasizes the collective responsibility in fostering a cyber-resilient nation.” She also highlighted the month’s focus on promoting cyber hygiene, fostering a diverse cyber workforce, and strengthening the technological foundations of critical infrastructure.
