India has finalized a free trade agreement with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), comprising Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. This agreement, achieved after over fifteen years of negotiations, aims to eliminate import tariffs on industrial goods from EFTA states and encourage $100 billion in investments across various sectors in India, including manufacturing.

The EFTA agreement is part of India’s broader shift towards more open trade policies, following recent agreements with Australia and the United Arab Emirates. This move marks a significant departure from India’s historical emphasis on economic self-sufficiency and protectionism. The agreement is expected to create approximately 1 million jobs in India over the next fifteen years, addressing ongoing challenges with unemployment.

While the deal excludes certain key Indian products like dairy and coal from export tariffs, it does not heavily involve the agricultural sector, reflecting ongoing political sensitivities around protectionism. The absence of agriculture in major trade deals underscores the complexities of domestic political considerations in trade negotiations.

Other Key Developments

India Implements Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA): India has started the implementation of the CAA, which facilitates citizenship for certain persecuted religious minorities from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, or Pakistan, excluding Muslims. The law’s implementation has reignited debates about its implications for India’s secular constitution and the treatment of Muslim communities.

Political Shifts in Pakistan: Pakistan’s government has announced a new cabinet, notably appointing Muhammad Aurangzeb, a former corporate executive, as the finance minister. This selection suggests a strategic move to address economic challenges with a technocratic approach. Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Imran Khan remains a significant figure in Pakistani politics, with recent developments indicating heightened security measures around him following an alleged attack plot on the prison where he is detained.

Indian Electoral Developments: In the lead-up to national elections, India’s election commission is undergoing changes, with the recent resignation of Commissioner Arun Goel and the retirement of Anup Pandey. These departures have sparked discussions about the integrity and management of the electoral process in the world’s largest democracy.
