In response to the increasing threat of wildfires, Colorado lawmakers have introduced House Bill 25-1182, aiming to mandate insurance companies to provide homeowners with detailed information regarding wildfire risks and strategies for mitigation. The proposed legislation seeks to ensure that insurers utilizing wildfire risk assessment models disclose pertinent information to both the state’s insurance commissioner and the public. Additionally, it requires these models to incorporate specific mitigation activities and obligates insurers to notify policyholders about their property’s wildfire risk status.
This initiative aligns with recent efforts by Governor Jared Polis, who signed several bills designed to assist wildfire victims in rebuilding and to improve access to insurance. Notably, House Bill 23-1174 addresses underinsurance issues by requiring home insurance companies to offer various options covering repair or replacement costs for damaged structures. Furthermore, House Bill 23-1288 establishes a nonprofit public entity to guarantee that residents in wildfire-prone areas can obtain homeowners or commercial insurance if private insurers decline coverage.
The urgency of such measures is underscored by the rising home insurance premiums in disaster-prone regions. A recent report highlighted that over 10% of homeowners in Colorado face annual insurance costs exceeding $4,000. This surge is attributed to the increasing frequency of natural disasters and escalating building material costs.
By enforcing transparency and promoting proactive mitigation, Colorado’s proposed legislation aims to equip homeowners with the necessary tools and information to protect their properties against the growing threat of wildfires.
