Chinese Authorities Question Staff of Bain & Company in Shanghai

Chinese law enforcement officials have reportedly questioned staff at the Shanghai office of the US consulting firm Bain & Company. A spokesperson for Bain confirmed the development, stating, “We can confirm that the Chinese authorities have questioned staff in our Shanghai office. We are cooperating as appropriate with the Chinese authorities. At this time, we have no further comment.”

The specifics regarding the roles and identities of the questioned staff or the reasons for the police operation remain unclear. In China, criminal investigations are typically shrouded in secrecy, and the outcomes may take years to be disclosed.

According to reports, two weeks ago, police made an unexpected visit to Bain & Company’s Shanghai office, seizing phones and computers without detaining any staff members. This incident raises concerns among foreign firms about the operational safety in China, especially following last month’s raid on the Beijing office of US due diligence firm Mintz Group, where five staff members were detained.

The Chinese authorities later stated that Mintz Group was under investigation for “illegal” activities. This recent event adds to the growing scrutiny faced by foreign companies operating in China. Notably, China’s cybersecurity watchdog initiated a probe last month into the security of products manufactured by US memory chipmaker Micron Technology.
