Xie Feng, China’s recently appointed ambassador to the United States, acknowledged the “serious difficulties and challenges” in Sino-American relations but expressed his commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation. Upon arriving at New York City’s John F Kennedy International Airport, Xie stated that safeguarding China’s interests and fostering exchanges between the two nations were his primary responsibilities. As a seasoned diplomat and fluent English speaker, Xie has previously held positions at China’s embassy in Washington, DC, and most recently served as the vice foreign minister overseeing US-related policies.

Despite Xie’s reputation for delivering pointed criticisms of US actions, including a recent incident involving a suspected Chinese spy balloon, the US State Department welcomed his arrival. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller emphasized the commitment to maintaining communication channels with the People’s Republic of China to responsibly manage competition.

Xie’s confrontational approach in prior meetings with US officials, coupled with a history of issuing demands to improve ties, underscores the complexities of the US-China relationship. However, his appointment fills a diplomatic void, as the embassy post had remained vacant since the promotion of his predecessor Qin Gang to foreign minister late last year. The extended vacancy, reportedly the longest in four decades, had drawn criticism, and Xie’s arrival is seen as an effort to address calls for increased engagement from the Biden administration.

The timing of Xie’s appointment aligns with recent undisclosed talks between US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi, described as “candid, substantive, and constructive.” President Joe Biden, expressing a desire for more US-China talks, anticipates further engagement in the near future. While Xie has the potential to facilitate better communication, analysts note the importance of his choices in steering bilateral relations away from deterioration. Recent interactions with senior US business executives suggest a diplomatic effort to prevent further tensions in the relationship.
