China’s Manufacturing Industry Shows New Growth at 2024 World Manufacturing Convention

HEFEI, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) — The 2024 World Manufacturing Convention, which opened on Friday in Hefei, capital of Anhui Province, has showcased new innovations and developments in China’s manufacturing industry. Among the highlights is Qijiang-2, a humanoid robot developed by the Anhui Provincial Key Laboratory of Humanoid Robots, which has captured the attention of visitors at the event. Standing 1.8 meters tall, Qijiang-2 is designed to mimic human movements with precision and can perform tasks such as folding clothes, opening bottles, wiping dishes, and navigating uneven terrain.

Equipped with advanced sensors and inertial measurement units, the robot also features intelligent decision-making capabilities, including user recognition and secure access for authorized users. Liu Houde, director of the laboratory, highlighted the potential applications of these robots in both industrial production and elderly care, pointing out that they could serve as both workers and caregivers in the future.

The convention also features other technological breakthroughs, such as the Jiuzhou Yunjian Longyun rocket engine and the Origin Wukong superconducting quantum computer, demonstrating China’s advancements in high-tech manufacturing. These exhibits reflect the country’s growing presence in frontier technologies and its commitment to international cooperation.

Representatives from global enterprises and industry experts are attending the event, underscoring China’s role in addressing both challenges and opportunities in the global manufacturing sector. Enno Tang, president and CEO of Continental China, noted the significance of China’s market and advanced technologies, recognizing the country’s manufacturing capabilities as key to the future of global production.

China’s comprehensive industrial ecosystem continues to attract foreign investment. For example, in April, Volkswagen announced a 2.5 billion euro (approximately 2.8 billion U.S. dollars) investment to expand its production and innovation hub in Hefei. The company is also accelerating the production of smart electric vehicles in collaboration with Chinese manufacturer Xpeng, following a 2023 agreement to share advanced driving assistance technology.

This partnership highlights China’s willingness to share its automotive technologies with the world, as noted by Xpeng CEO He Xiaopeng. As the global economic landscape evolves, China is strengthening its international partnerships, aiming to foster growth in the global manufacturing sector and contribute to the transition toward high-quality, sustainable development.

Further illustrating this trend, Schneider Electric began construction of its Xiamen Industrial Park in April. Once completed, the facility will become the company’s largest manufacturing site for medium voltage equipment globally and a major hub for research and development. The park will serve both domestic and international markets, reinforcing China’s strategic role in global supply chains.

China continues to position itself as a leader in advanced manufacturing, combining innovation-driven policies, open market access, and strategic partnerships to further strengthen its global manufacturing presence. Wan Hongxian, a professor at Anhui University of Finance and Economics, emphasized that China’s focus on high-end, intelligent, and green development is fueling the growth of its manufacturing sector and benefiting consumers worldwide.
