China has recently achieved a significant breakthrough in civil nuclear energy technology by commencing operations of the world’s first fourth-generation nuclear reactor. This development places China at the forefront of the global race to advance nuclear technology, a key component in the transition to net-zero electricity.

The reactor is part of the Shidaowan nuclear power plant and began its commercial operations on December 6, as announced by China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), a major contributor to the project. CNNC’s statement highlighted that this marks the successful transition of fourth-generation nuclear technology from the experimental phase to commercial application.

Regarded for their enhanced safety and efficiency, Generation IV reactors like the one at Shidaowan represent a significant advancement in nuclear technology. Tsinghua University, a collaborator in the reactor’s development, has stated that these reactors can be naturally cooled down without the need for emergency core cooling systems, a feature that underscores their inherent safety.

Zhang Zuoyi, the project’s chief designer and dean of Tsinghua University’s Institute of Nuclear and New Energy Technology, emphasized the reactor’s versatility in producing heat, electricity, and hydrogen, contributing to global efforts towards carbon neutrality.

The operationalization of this reactor places China ahead in the field of nuclear technology research and development. Experts like Francois Morin, China director of the World Nuclear Association, note that Western countries are only expected to launch their fourth-generation reactors in the early 2030s. David Fishman, a senior manager at the Lantau Group, echoed this, recognizing China’s unique position in building and commercializing next-generation nuclear power technology.

The global recognition of nuclear power as a means to achieve net-zero emission goals was evident at the COP28 climate summit in Dubai, where the United States and 21 other countries pledged to triple their nuclear energy capacity by 2050. This declaration underlines nuclear energy’s crucial role in maintaining the 1.5-degree Celsius temperature goal set by the Paris Agreement.

Although not a signatory of the COP28 declaration, China is actively increasing its nuclear energy capacities to meet its rising electricity demand while reducing emissions. As of 2020, nuclear energy comprised 5% of China’s energy mix, primarily dominated by coal. This proportion is expected to rise to 10% by 2035 and 18% by 2060.

Currently, China operates 55 nuclear power units with a total capacity of 57 GW and has an additional 24 units under construction. By 2060, the nation’s nuclear capacity is projected to reach 400 GW. To sustain this growth, China plans to approve six to eight new nuclear power units annually for the foreseeable future.
