China’s National Development and Reform Commission has revealed a series of policy initiatives aimed at strengthening ties between Taiwan and the coastal province of Fujian. The measures are part of a broader strategy to foster integrated development across the Taiwan Strait, as announced by the Chinese state planner.
Vice Chairman of the Commission, Cong Liang, detailed the plans during a news conference, emphasizing efforts to enhance the interconnectedness of Xiamen, a city in China, and the Kinmen islands, which are controlled by Taiwan but located near Xiamen. These initiatives include advancing the integration of gas, electricity, and transportation links.
China’s proposal includes facilitating Taiwanese enterprises’ access to Fujian and speeding up the development of an experimental zone in Pingtan, the nearest point to Taiwan’s main island. Additionally, China is considering allowing Kinmen to utilize Xiamen’s new airport and promoting energy cooperation between Taiwan and Ningde, a city in Fujian.
A notable aspect of the plan is the ambition to construct a cross-strait high-speed railway, aimed at further bridging the geographical divide.
The announcement aligns with China’s longstanding approach towards Taiwan, offering a dichotomy of peace and prosperity versus conflict and decline. However, Taiwan has consistently rejected China’s sovereignty claims. The ongoing tension is exemplified by regular incursions of China’s air force into Taiwan’s air defence zone, as reported by Taiwan.
In response to the news, shares of some Fujian-based companies experienced a boost, with Strait Innovation Internet and Zhongfu Straits Pingtan Development Co witnessing significant rises in their stock values.
